JOSEPH ALBERS (1888-1976) was a influential artist who helped define and cultivate an entire generation of post war artists in the United States. Accomplished as a designer, photographer, typographer and printmaker, he is best remembered and lauded as an abstract painter and theorist on the power of colour in deisign. / His studies and theoretical work gave rise to his proposal of colour rather than form as the predominant pictoral language. / In his seminal series Homgage to the Square produced from 1949 until his death, Albers uses a single square shape to explore the vast range of visual effects acheivable through colour and spatial relationship alone. / Albers joined the Weimar Bauhaus in 1920 at the age of 32 eventually becoming a professor or Bauhausmeister in Dessau teaching alongside other Bauhaus stalwarts such as Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.
